1936년 10월 9일생인 이상원 박사는 부인 이춘자 여사와의 사이에 2남1녀(아들 이동형, 이건형, 딸 이진이)를 두고 있다.
이 책에는 안면도 시골에서 태어나 연세대 의과대학을 졸업하고 홀로 미국에서 레지던트를 하며 온 가족들을 미국으로 이민시키기까지 그의 노고가 고스란히 묻어 있다. 어린 시절, 동생이 아무런 병명도, 이유도 모른 채 죽어가는 것을 본 이상원 박사는 다른 가정에는 이러한 엄청난 고통이 없도록 하기 위해 의사로서 최선을 다하는 삶을 살아왔다.

Born on October 9, 1936, Dr. Lee Sang-won and his wife, Lee Chun-ja, have two sons and one daughter (sons Lee Dong-hyung and Lee Geon-hyung, and daughter Lee Jin-i).
This book vividly portrays his struggles, from his birth in rural Anmyeondo Island, his graduation from Yonsei University College of Medicine, his solo residency in the United States, and his subsequent immigration of his entire family. As a child, Dr. Lee Sang-won witnessed his younger sibling die without a diagnosis or cause. He dedicated his life as a doctor to preventing other families from experiencing such excruciating pain.
