Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Bacterial conjunctivitis

■ Causes of Bacterial Conjunctivitis
● Acute bacterial conjunctivitis can occur when a bacterial infection occurs in the conjunctiva.
● Conjunctivitis caused by gonorrhea is also a type of bacterial conjunctivitis, but this section will discuss conjunctivitis caused by other bacterial infections.
● Acute bacterial conjunctivitis can occur when bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae group B (Haemophilus influenzae group B), Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, or Group B hemolytic Streptococcus infect the conjunctiva. Acute bacterial conjunctivitis often occurs as a secondary bacterial infection with otitis media, sinusitis, a cold, other viral upper or lower respiratory tract infections, or bacterial upper or lower respiratory tract infections.
However, acute bacterial conjunctivitis can also occur independently.

■ Signs and Symptoms of Bacterial Conjunctivitis
● Signs and symptoms of acute bacterial conjunctivitis vary depending on the type of bacteria causing it, the severity of the conjunctivitis, and the presence or absence of complications.
● When bacteria infect the conjunctiva and cause acute conjunctivitis, the conjunctiva becomes red and bloodshot, the eyelids swell, and yellow discharge accumulates. (See photo.)
● In severe cases of bacterial conjunctivitis, the eyelids and eyelids may swell to the point where it’s difficult to open the eyes.
● Conjunctivitis can occur in only one eye or both simultaneously.
● Symptoms and signs of acute conjunctivitis may coexist with those of other conditions, such as otitis media or sinusitis.
● Parents should also be quasi-physicians – see Pediatric Nursing Encyclopedia, Volume 7, Infectious Diseases in Children and Adolescents – Scarlet Fever.
■ Diagnosis of Bacterial Conjunctivitis
● Diagnosis is based on a comprehensive review of medical history, symptoms, and physical examination findings.
● If acute bacterial conjunctivitis is suspected, a sample of pus is collected from the conjunctiva of the affected eye for a Gram stain microscopic examination and bacterial culture to determine the specific bacterial infection causing the condition.
● However, a bacterial culture is often not required for diagnosis, and the diagnosis is often based on symptoms, signs, and physical examination findings.
● Acute bacterial conjunctivitis often occurs alongside other conditions, such as otitis media or sinusitis. Therefore, if you have acute bacterial conjunctivitis, it’s important to be evaluated for otitis media or sinusitis.
● See Table 2: Differential Diagnosis of Bacterial, Viral, and Allergic Conjunctivitis.

■ Treatment of Bacterial Conjunctivitis
● Treatment varies depending on the severity, cause, and presence of complications of bacterial conjunctivitis.
● Ideally, a bacterial culture should be performed on the pus resulting from bacterial conjunctivitis to determine the bacteria causing the conjunctivitis. Treatment should then begin with appropriate antibiotic eye ointment or antibiotic eye drops.
● Ideally, treatment should be administered with the most effective antibiotic to kill the causative bacteria, as determined by the type of bacteria identified through a Gram stain microscopic examination, bacterial culture, or antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
● Without such testing, treatment can be administered with the most effective oral antibiotic based on experience, antibiotic eye drops, or both.
■ Antibiotic eye ointments or drops are commonly used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis
■ Antibiotic eye ointments or drops are commonly used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis
Erythromycin eye ointment,
Chloramphenicol eye ointment,
Sulfa drug eye ointment,
Tobramycin eye ointment (Tobrex),
Azithromycin in durasite
Gentamycin eye ointment
Polytrim eye ointment
Moxifloxacin (Vigamox) eye drops
Becifloxacin eye drops
Povidone-iodine eye drops
Other
● Depending on your doctor’s prescription, you may choose one of several antibiotic eye ointments or drops and apply them to your eyes for about 10 days. These days, bacterial conjunctivitis is often treated with fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotics like Fluoroquinolones eye drops, Vigamox (Moxifloxacin) eye drops, and eye drops.
Povidone-iodine eye drops are said to be effective in treating bacterial or chlamydial conjunctivitis.
Even if bacterial conjunctivitis is limited to one eye, treatment can involve applying eye ointment or eye drops to both eyes for the first few days, then applying them only to the affected eye for the next few days.
Bacteria that cause bacterial conjunctivitis can invade not only the eyes but also the middle ear or paranasal sinuses, potentially causing conjunctivitis and otitis media and/or sinusitis.
Therefore, when suffering from acute bacterial conjunctivitis, it is important to determine if otitis media or sinusitis is also present and treat accordingly. ● Infants and young children may dislike and cry when receiving eye ointment or eye drops.
● Most infants and young children may cry immediately after receiving liquid eye drops.
● The liquid eye drops can easily wash out quickly with tears.
● Therefore, it is better to treat conjunctivitis in infants and young children with ointment eye drops whenever possible, rather than with eye drops.
● When treating bacterial conjunctivitis with ointments, eye drops, or eye drops, the eyes may sting, and the child may cry for a short time, making it difficult to see.

● Eye drops themselves can cause drug allergies, causing stinging, pain, and swelling in the eyes.
● If your child dislikes the eye drops, carefully monitor them for allergic reactions or side effects.
● Unless side effects or allergies occur, continue administering the eye drops as prescribed.
● If you have any questions during treatment, consult your doctor.

I think it has been more than a century since we needed a Korean-language parenting information bible that anyone can easily access and read, anywhere, anytime, to promote health, which is a basic necessity of life for Korean men, women, and children in Korea and around the world.
If you have the time, you can read it all over the world. I would like to give each Korean family the entire Parenting Bible.
If I have time, I would like to read the entire Parenting Bible aloud to my beloved Korean parents.
Of course, there may be some shortcomings. I am confident that if you raise your children while referring to other parenting bibles, they will grow up happily.
