◘ Otitis Media in Newborn Infants
Otitis media in newborn infants (Neonatal otitis media)
■ Causes of Otitis Media in Newborns
● Otitis media in newborns occurs when the middle ear of a newborn becomes infected and inflamed, causing the middle ear to swell and become filled with pus.
● Otitis media in newborns is more commonly caused by secondary bacterial infections following upper or lower respiratory infections, such as colds, bronchiolitis, or pneumonia.
● The most common causes of otitis media in newborns are viral or bacterial infections.
● The types of bacteria that cause otitis media in newborns may differ from those that cause otitis media in infants and children later in life.
● Rarely, a fetus may develop otitis media before birth.
● Otitis media can also develop as a complication of sepsis or pneumonia.
● Neonatal otitis media can be caused by:
● Escherichia coli,
● Staphylococcus aureus,
● Haemophilus influenzae type B or non-B Haemophilus influenzae,
● Group A hemolytic streptococcus infection, or
● Group B hemolytic streptococcus infection in the middle ear.
■ Symptoms, Signs, and Diagnosis of Neonatal Otitis Media
● Neonatal otitis media presents with a variety of symptoms.
● The main symptoms include:
● Acute bacterial otitis media often develops as a secondary bacterial infection during a cold or other viral upper respiratory infection.
● Otitis media caused by this type may present with symptoms similar to those of a cold or other otitis media.
● If a newborn develops otitis media after suffering from a viral upper respiratory infection, such as a cold, they may not eat breast milk or formula, which they usually did well with during the cold. They may become more fussy, have a low-to-high fever, have difficulty sleeping, and sometimes even vomit or experience diarrhea.
● A stuffy nose, caused by a cold, can cause difficulty breathing.
● Sometimes, otitis media can go undetected for a while.
● Sometimes, newborns are first diagnosed with otitis media when they visit a pediatrician for another illness.

■ Treatment of Neonatal Otitis Media
● When a bacterial infection occurs in a newborn, their immune system is generally weak. The bacteria can spread to various organs and systems throughout the body in a relatively short period of time, causing infections in various parts of the body.
● When otitis media occurs in a newborn, the bacteria that cause it can also infect other parts of the body, causing bacterial infections in other areas.
● For this reason, if a newborn has otitis media and appears to have a fever or pain, they should be hospitalized.
● Hospitalization is especially common if a newborn has a fever, is not eating well, or is fussy with otitis media.
● If there are no complications, the newborn is eating well, has no fever, is in good mood, and appears to be in overall good health, otitis media can be treated at home with oral antibiotics as prescribed by a doctor.
● Until otitis media is completely cured, you should follow your doctor’s instructions to ensure it is being treated effectively. After receiving the prescribed medication for an appropriate period of time, be sure to re-diagnose to confirm the cure.

I think it has been more than a century since we needed a Korean-language parenting information bible that anyone can easily access and read, anywhere, anytime, to promote health, which is one of the basic necessities of life for Korean men, women, and children in Korea and around the world.
If you have the time, I would like to give the entire Parenting Bible to every Korean family.
If I have time, I would love to read the entire Parenting Bible aloud to all my beloved Korean parents.
Of course, there may be some shortcomings. I am confident that if you refer to other parenting bibles while raising your children, they will undoubtedly grow up happily.
