The facial nerve is the seventh of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves.

● All twelve pairs of cranial nerves are present normally. These 12 pairs of cranial nerves originate from the brain within the cranial cavity, pass through the cranial nerve foramina in the skull, and emerge from the cranial cavity to distribute to the head, eyes, nose, mouth, stomach, face, pharynx, heart, and stomach.
The facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve among the 12 pairs of cranial nerves.
One facial nerve, on each side, supplies the left and right sides of the face.
The facial nerve on one side of the face supplies only that side of the face.
Facial nerve paralysis and facial nerve disorders can occur in newborns and children after the neonatal period.
■ Causes of facial nerve paralysis in newborns
● Newborns born after difficult deliveries
● When the fetus’s face is compressed abnormally by the mother’s birth canal
● When the fetus’s face or head is compressed by forceps during forceps delivery
● When the facial nerve origin within the brain is congenitally underdeveloped
● It can occur with congenital agenesis of the mandible. During a twin pregnancy, when one fetus’ face is pressed against the other fetus’s face for a prolonged period, compressing the facial nerve, one or both sides of the facial nerve can become paralyzed.
One facial nerve trunk passes through the facial nerve foramen in the skull and emerges from the skull. Normally, this trunk divides into ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular branches. Paralysis can occur in one facial nerve trunk, or in only one of the three branches.
Rarely, damage to the intracranial brain region where the facial nerve originates, unrelated to childbirth, can result in paralysis of the entire facial nerve trunk on that side.
After the newborn period, a child may suddenly become completely paralyzed on one side of the face without a clear cause.

■ Symptoms and Signs of Neonatal Facial Nerve Palsy

● Symptoms and signs vary depending on the location of the damaged facial nerve, the degree of damage, and the cause. Congenital facial nerve palsy and acquired facial nerve palsy have different symptoms and signs.
● When only one of the three branches of the facial nerve is damaged, facial paralysis may occur only in the area of the face supplied by that branch.
● Furthermore, the symptoms and signs differ depending on whether the entire facial nerve is paralyzed due to damage to the origin of the facial nerve, or whether only one of the three branches of the facial nerve outside the skull is paralyzed.
● When the facial nerve origin is damaged, half or two-thirds of the face on the opposite side of the injury may become paralyzed.
● If the entire facial nerve is paralyzed after it emerges from the origin of the brain and exits the skull, the mouth on the affected side cannot be opened or closed wide. Even when crying, the mouth on the affected side cannot be opened properly. The wrinkles of skin between the nose and lips (nasolabial folds) on the affected side may appear weak and thin.
● The mouth on the side with the intact facial nerve (see Figure 197) can open and close forcefully, and the nasolabial folds are deep and strong, causing the entire mouth to become crooked.
● The eye on the affected side cannot be closed tightly (see Figure 198).
● Tears may not flow from that eye.
● The nasolabial folds on the affected side are small when frowning, and the entire face on that side is weak.
● The forehead wrinkles on the affected side may disappear.
● When one or two branches of the facial nerve on one side are congenitally paralyzed, only one or two facial muscles may be affected.
● The paralyzed corners of the mouth or lower lip may be weaker than the normal lower lip.
● This condition is not uncommon.
■ Diagnosis of Neonatal Facial Nerve Paralysis:
A diagnosis can be made based on a comprehensive review of medical history, symptoms, and physical findings.
Facial nerve paralysis in children after the newborn period can be caused by conditions such as Lyme disease.
Therefore, such conditions must be included in the differential diagnosis.
■ Treatment of Neonatal Facial Nerve Paralysis
● The location of the facial nerve damage, from its origin in the brain to its distribution to the face,
● The type of facial nerve paralysis,
● Treatment also varies depending on the cause of the facial nerve paralysis.
● Most cases of paralysis of the distal branches of the facial nerve recover spontaneously within 1-2 weeks. Special treatment is often not necessary.
● The eye on the affected side of the facial nerve may not produce tears, may not close properly, and may dry out the cornea, potentially leading to corneal damage.
● In these cases, treatment involves instilling artificial tears into the eye as prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
● Depending on the cause, it may be treated with surgery,
● or it may not be permanent.
I greet you as I write this.

17. That I believe it’s been over a century since we needed a parenting information bible, written in Korean, that anyone can easily access and read, anywhere, anytime, to promote health, a fundamental necessity for Koreans of all ages and abilities in Korea and around the world.
If I had the time, I would like to donate the entire Parenting Bible to every Korean family worldwide.
If I had the time, I would read the entire Parenting Bible aloud to all my beloved Korean parents.
Of course, there may be shortcomings. I am confident that if you refer to other parenting bibles while raising your children, they will undoubtedly grow up happily.
