Nightmares (Nightmare/Dream Anxiety Disorder)
Nightmares
Nightmares are a type of sleep disorder in children.
Parents are alarmed and worried when their children experience nightmares or sleep terrors.
The cause is unknown.
Nightmares are more likely to occur in the following situations:
Preschool children who are worried about being separated from their parents,
children who are worried about their parents leaving them alone at daycare,
children who are afraid of having a new sibling,
children who are afraid their parents will leave them home alone on a long business trip.
Children who undergo rigorous toilet training are also prone to nightmares.
Children with grade anxiety may also experience nightmares. School-age children who experience conflicts and conflicts with their peers, are bullied, have difficulty communicating with teachers, are not good at sports, are ridiculed by peers, or suffer from anxiety or depression can also experience nightmares.
Nightmares can be triggered by flashbacks of frightening experiences experienced during sleep.
Children who worry and fear being separated from their parents or those with chronic anxiety disorders can experience severe nightmares.
Nightmares are not a mental illness.
About 5% of children experience nightmares.
Nightmares are rare before age 6.
They usually begin before age 11.
They typically disappear naturally with age.
Girls are more likely to experience nightmares than boys.
The symptoms of nightmares vary.
Nightmares occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep (paradoxical sleep/rapid eye movement sleep).
In other words, they are more likely to occur within 1-2 hours of falling asleep. Sleep terrors occur during non-REM sleep.
Night terrors or sleep terrors can occur when a person is caught in a frightening dream involving an animal, a scary person, or an event, and then runs away, feeling life-threatening, suffocated, or unable to escape.
If a person is suffocated or unable to escape during a frightening dream, they may wake up and tell their parents about the dream.
Sometimes, they have difficulty hearing after a nightmare.
Night terrors can cause sleepwalking, and sleepwalking can lead to injury.
Children who wake from nightmares have a sense of place, time, and location.
They can easily calm down.
However, children who wake from sleep terrors lack a sense of place, time, and location.
They may vividly recall the nightmare the next day.
■ Treatment for nightmares:
Speak softly, put the child back to bed, and calm them down.
Hold the child warmly,
and love them unconditionally and sincerely.
In severe cases, consult with a pediatrician or psychiatrist.
