What is love?

● The word “love” is a word we use a lot.
● Even to newborns who can’t express their love in words, moms and dads say, “I love you.” Even in these instances, they use the word “love.”
● Moms and dads often say, “I love you,” to their growing children. American parents, in particular, frequently say, “I love you” to their children.
● Boys often say, “I love you,” to boys, and girls often say, “I love you.”
● They also often say, “God loves us, and we love God.”
● “I love you” is a word we say a lot.
● Even between the opposite sex, “I love you” is often said.

● Children love their parents, and parents love their children.
● The word “love” here has several meanings. 1. The Korean Dictionary, edited by Dr. Yang Ju-dong, defines love as:
● “a warm heart that cherishes and cares for others.”
● “a man and woman’s affection for each other and yearning for each other.”
● “a heart of compassion and generosity.”
● “God’s compassion and blessings to others.”
2. The Korean Dictionary, edited by Dr. Lee Hee-seung, defines love as:
● “a heart of compassion and care for each other, and such a heart.”
● “a man and woman’s affection for each other and yearning for each other, and a lover.”
● “a heart of compassion, kindness, and generosity.”
● “a passion that pursues the realization of compassion, mercy, salvation, and happiness, not carnal or sensual. In other words, it is the love of God who sent his only begotten Son, Jesus, love for one’s neighbor, and the love of those who long for God.”
3. Webster’s Dictionary, 2nd Edition, defines love as:
● “A strong affection for, attachment to, or devotion to a person or persons.”
● “A strong liking for, or interest in, something; as, her love of acting.”
● “A strong, usually passionate, affection for a person of the opposite sex.”
● “The person who is the object of such an affection; a sweetheart; a lover.”
● “Sexual passion or its gratification.”
4. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the Bible describes love as:
● Verse 4;
● Love is patient,
● Love is kind,
● Love does not envy,
● Love does not boast,
● It is not puffed up,
● Verse 5;
● It does not behave rudely,
● It does not seek its own,
● It is not easily provoked,
● It keeps no record of wrongs,
● Verse 6;
● It does not rejoice in iniquity,
● It rejoices with the truth,
● Verse 7;
● It bears all things,
● It believes all things,
● It hopes all things,
● It endures all things.
He defined love as follows:
5. Bible Corinthians, Chapter 13, verses 4-7
● 4: Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
● 5: It does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
● 6: It does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
● 7: It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endorses all things. 6. Agape Love:
● Spiritual love that empties oneself and unconditionally gives everything for the other (LeRoy Koopman)

● The love revealed in the New Testament, which can be summarized as the love of Jesus, referring to God’s self-sacrifice and mercy for sinful humans (Lee Hee-seung – Korean Dictionary)
