Diversity among American children and adolescents
The total number of children and adolescents in the United States is 7,000, and most have grown up relatively stable over the past several decades.
A quarter of all children and adolescents were born outside the United States or had foreign-born parents. Without immigration, the number of children and adolescents would decline.
Half of all children and adolescents in the United States are neither White nor of Spanish descent. 26% are Hispanic, 14% are of Native American descent, 5% are of Asian descent, and 5% are of other descent.
One-fifth of all children and adolescents speak a language other than English at home.
One-sixth of all children and adolescents fall into the federal poverty level (defined as a family of four earning less than $25,465 annually).
Four-tenths of all children and adolescents receive health care through public health insurance. The number of uninsured children and adolescents has decreased by more than 50% over the past 20 years.
