Foot-and-mouth disease is a disease that occurs when cattle, pigs, sheep, and other cloven-hoofed animals (animals with cloven hooves) are infected with the foot-and-mouth disease virus, and is highly contagious, so it is designated as a Class 1 livestock infectious disease in Korea.

농림축산식품부는 독일에서 구제역 발생이 보고돼 독일산 돼지고기와 돼지 생산물 수입을 금지한다고 11일 밝혔다.

구제역은 소, 돼지, 양 등 우제류(발굽이 둘로 갈라진 동물)가 구제역 바이러스에 감염돼 발생하는 질병으로 전염성이 강해 국내에선 제1종 가축전염병으로 지정돼 있다.

독일 연방식품농업부는 앞서 브란덴부르크주 소재 농장에서 폐사한 물소 세 마리가 구제역임을 확인해 세계동물보건기구(WOAH)에 보고했다.
