Every day, more and more students are feeling the weight of stress, anxiety, and depression, but schools aren’t enough to help students. Mental health problems are a real thing, and their numbers are only getting worse. Schools do have some resources to “combat” and “help” with the mental health of their kids, but they are falling short. I say it is time for a change
When most people think of school, they think of basic things like civics, algebra, ECE Intro to Academic Writing, and friends.
But what’s talked about a lot through the students and some teachers is how stressful school is done about it.
Lots of people overlook the stress of school because you can just say is just homework” or “teenage growing pains.”
but the number of students going through this is hard to pass.
According to 2022 report from the American Psychological Association, “more students are asking for help with mental health issues than ever before. The problem is schools are equipped to handle it”
By looking at that, I would say that it is time to start looking at student mental health more, just like we look at just academic success.
This problem isn’t just in a few places. The CDC reports that” About one in three high school students regularly feel sad or hopeless: that is a pretty big number of students feeling this way because mental health stress suicidal is second school leading cause of death teenagers in the US. We need to open our eyes and see that this is an epidemic, and if we don’t start looking forward to working hard to deal with mental health,it just get worse and worse.
The issue is that most schools aren’t no fully prepared to cover academic stress, let alone mental health. For example, my school has a therapist and a couple of guidance counselors that we could talk to, but if I were to tell everyone I know to go to them, the counselors and therapist would not have enough time.
I learned that some schools that have counselors and therapists wouldn’t have enough time.
I learned that there are some schools that have a counselor for every 500 to 700 kids in the school, which is insane and way too low.
With those numbers, there is just no time for the counselors to get to everybody in need.
But even worse, there are schools that are unaware of the issue regarding mental health. There is a large number of students who hold on to their feelings and hold back on telling anyone because they are afraid of being judged or made fun of.
The CDC’s Health Youth Guide points out that “students need to know it is OK to ask for help and that starts with making mental health a normal part of the conversation. “Right now, most school areas are still behind when it comes to this.
There are ways to fix this problem. The solution is not just hiring a couple of more counselors (even though that’s part of it).
The bigger part of the plan is that schools need to create programs and create more open spaces for students to express their issues. This can be done by training the teachers on how to be space and how to look for the signs, adding or creating more programs that are relevant and actually help.
And it’s not just about the basics. Schools need to teach students how to manage stress and build emotional resilience.
Educational Week highlights how schools that have implemented programs focused on social and emotional learning have seen positive results. But those programs aren’t available everywhere, and that is a problem. School needs to make them a priority.
Of course, some will argue that schools don’t have the budget to hire more counselors or to create more new programs. They will say we should focus on “necessary classes” like reading, writing, and math. But here’s the thing, students can learn if they are struggling mentally. When students are depressed or stressed out, it is impossible for them to focus on their studies.
Mental health and academic success go hand in hand. If schools want students to succeed, they need to care for their mental health first.
We can’t wait any longer. Schools need to make mental health a top priority, and they need to do it now. That means more funding, counselors, mental health programs, and a shift in how we think about mental health in general. More importantly, it means an environment where students feel supported and heard. Mental health isn’t just a buzzword. It’s the foundation of everything else. If schools don’t step up, we’re only going to keep seeing more students fall through the cracks.
It is time to act, and it is time to start today.
