목에 보이지 않는청진기를 걸고 태어난 이상원 소아과전문의

그는 충남 태안군 안면도 중장리 장등개 농부 아버지 이 시우와 농부 정향섭 어머님,두 부모사이 9 남매자녀들 중 장남으로 보이지 않는 청진기를 목에 걸고 초가 삼칸 집애서 테어닜다.
삼칸 웃방에서 자다께어 보면 벽에 빈대가 설설 기어 다녀 손을 눌러잡으면 빨간 피가났다. 거기다가 모기가 막 물었다. 모기장 하나도 없고. 낮에는 벼룩이 성가시게 문다. 머리에 이가, 몸에 이가 기어다나면서 물고 알을 깐다.
변소에 가면 하얀 회충 기생충이 보인다. 때로는 촌충도 보인다. 어른이나 아이들 가르지 않고 모기에 물려 말라리아애 걸려 않는다.
그 당시 안면도에는 국민학교가 6개 있는 한국 섬들 중 일곱번 째로 큰 섬이었지만 내가 미국 1968년 올 때 까지 의과대학 졸업 한 의사가 하나도 없었다.
여섯살 여 동생이 귀젖이 나서 가게에 가서 페니실인 알약을 사다 2-3일 먹였더니 낫었다. 어머님이 말라리아에 걸려 산토닝을 가게에서 사다 드렸다니 낫었다, 어머니께서 항상 앓으셔 맴 술울 사드리고 봉양, 반하, 창출 등 한약재료도 산에서 캐다 드렸다. 홍성 시장에 가면 호랑이 간과 껍질이 만병애 좋다고 해서 사다 드렸다. 잔대도, 창출도 좋다고 해서 초 중교 다니며 어머님 병 치료 하느라고 고생을 많이 했다. 내가 의과 대학교 일년 때 청기로 어머님 심장을 처음 진찰 해 보니 심장 판박이 상해 비 정상 심장이 있다는 것을 듣고 심장 병을 앓으시는 것을 처음으로 알았다.
연세 의대 다닐 때 안면도와 연세 의대 무의촌 관계를 맺고 4년동안 안면도 무의촌 무료 진료를 해주하고 무료 진료를 한후 나는 방학때 서울로 바로 가지 않고 안면도 동네 무료 진료를 했드니, 나 중에 국회의원 될라고 그런다고.
안중국민학교 왕복 2십리 길을 눈이 오거나 빗 바람이 불어도 혼자 6년간 걸어 다녔다. 졸업식에서 수석하고 수석 상품은 삽 하나 이었다.
그후 홍성 중학을 마추고 홍성 고교에 입학 일학년 재학중 패혈증(지금 내 진단)에 걸려 3개월 동안 페니실인 주사 하루 한대 3개월 동안 누어 맞다가 광천에서 새번째 양의사의 진단 수술을 받고 다리에서 고름을 한 사발 꺼내고 살아 나서 고등 학교 일년 휴학 하고 홍성고등학교를 4년간 다녔다. 처음 진찰하고 진단 치료한 서울의대 출신 도립병원 의사는 아스피린을 갈어서 주고 나를 하숫집으로 기어 가도록 하고 추적 치료도 않했다. 그 의사 다음 나를 본 한의사는 다리에 고름이 잡혀 있는 데 그 다리 부위를 한번도 진찰하지도 않고 한약과 페니실인 한대로 3개월 동안 치료 했다. 세번 째 본 다른 의사는 바른 쪽 장단지 관절부위에 괸 고름을 수술로 빼 내고 난 살아 났다. 그 후 홀성 고등 학교 졸업하던 해는 홍고등학교 500여명 졸업생 중 수석을 했다.
안면도 태생으로 연세 의대를 한국 역사상 처음으로 들어가 63년도 졸업 한 후 한국 의사 면허증 국가 시험에 합격한 후 한국 의사 면허증을 수여 받았다.
의과대학 시절 국가공여 장학 금, 학교공여장학금, 신문 돌리기, 가정교사 해서 얻은 돈 그리고 부모님이 주신 돈으로 의과대학을 6년 만에 우수 한 성적으로 졸업했다. 의과 대학 4년차에 미국에 의사로서 갈수 있는 ECFM 시험에 합격했으나 흙 수저로 태어난 나는 눈물을 흘리면서 무의촌 봉사 근무해야 하는 길을 택 하게 되었다.
졸업후 바로 서산에서 무의촌 봉사 2년간 봉사하고, 그후 대한민국 육군 군위관 3년 봉사 근무 하고 그후 바로 도미 해 UCONN 의대. YALE 의대에서 소아과를 전공한 후 커네티컷 주 Willimantic에서 소아과 진료를 32년간 할 때 주민들은 나를 좋은 의사라고 칭찬을 많이 했다.이곳 신문사에서 First, Do No Harm으로 인술보시를 베프는 의사라고 칭찬을 한 신문기사와 환자 진찰하는 이 상원 소아과 전문의 사진과 저서 소아가정 간호 백과- 부모도 반의사가 되어야 한다 백과 사진 책.
내가 생각해 보면, 나는 하나님이 이 세상에 보내신 아주 드믄 의사라 생각 합니다.

He was born in a three-room thatched house in Jangdeung-gae, Anmyeon-do, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, the eldest of nine children of farmer father Lee Si-woo and farmer mother Jeong Hyang-seop.
When I woke up in the three-room upper room, I would see bedbugs crawling on the wall, and when I pressed them with my hand, red blood would come out. On top of that, mosquitoes would constantly bite me. There wasn’t even a mosquito net. During the day, fleas would annoyingly bite me. Lice crawled on my head and body, biting and laying eggs.
In the bathroom, I would see white roundworms and other parasites. Sometimes tapeworms were also visible. Adults and children alike would get malaria from mosquito bites.
At that time, Anmyeon-do was the seventh largest island among Korean islands, with six elementary schools, but until I came to the United States in 1968, there wasn’t a single doctor who had graduated from medical school.
My six-year-old younger sister had an ear infection, so I bought penicillin tablets from the store and gave them to her for two or three days, and she got better. My mother had malaria, so I bought Santonin from the store and gave it to her, and she got better. My mother was always ill, so I bought her snake liquor and served her, and I also dug up medicinal herbs such as Pinellia ternata and Atractylodes lancea from the mountains. When I went to Hongseong market, I bought tiger liver and skin, which were said to be good for all kinds of diseases, and gave them to her. I also bought Campanula and Atractylodes lancea, which were said to be good, and I suffered a lot trying to treat my mother’s illness while attending elementary and middle school. When I was in my first year of medical school, I examined my mother’s heart with a stethoscope for the first time and heard that she had an abnormal heart with damaged heart valves, and that’s when I first learned that she had heart disease. While attending Yonsei University College of Medicine, I established a connection with Anmyeondo Island and the Yonsei University rural medical service program, providing free medical treatment in Anmyeondo for four years. After providing free medical treatment, instead of going straight back to Seoul during my breaks, I continued to provide free medical treatment in the Anmyeondo village. Later, people said I was doing it to want to become a member of parliament.
I walked a 20-ri round trip to Anjung Elementary School alone for six years, regardless of snow or rain. I graduated at the top of my class, and my prize was a shovel.
After that, I finished Hongseong Middle School and entered Hongseong High School. During my first year, I contracted sepsis (my current diagnosis) and was bedridden for three months, receiving one penicillin injection a day. After receiving a diagnosis and surgery from a third doctor in Gwangcheon, a bowlful of pus was removed from my right hip joint area, and I survived. I took a year off from high school and attended Hongseong High School for four years. The first doctor who examined, diagnosed, and treated me, a graduate of Seoul National University College of Medicine at the provincial hospital, gave me crushed aspirin and made me crawl back to the boarding house, and did not provide any follow-up treatment. The next doctor I saw, a traditional Korean medicine practitioner, treated me with herbal medicine and one penicillin injection for three months, even though there was pus in my leg, without ever examining the affected area. The third doctor I saw surgically removed the pus that had accumulated in the joint area of my right hip joint, and I survived. The year I graduated from Hongseong High School, I was the top student among the 500 graduates.
Born in Anmyeondo, I was the first person in Korean history to enter Yonsei University College of Medicine, graduating in 1963. After passing the Korean national medical licensing examination, I received my Korean medical license. During my time in medical school, I graduated with excellent grades in six years, thanks to a national scholarship, a school scholarship, money earned from delivering newspapers and tutoring, and money given by my parents. In my fourth year of medical school, I passed the ECFMG exam, which would allow me to intern in medicine in the United States, but as someone born into poverty, I tearfully chose the path of serving in underserved rural areas.
After graduating, I immediately served in an underserved rural area in Seosan for two years, then served as a military doctor in the Republic of Korea Army for three years. After that, I came to the United States and specialized in pediatrics at UCONN School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine. I practiced pediatrics in Willimantic, Connecticut for 32 years, and the residents praised me as a good doctor. The local newspaper published an article praising me as a doctor who practices medicine with compassion, titled “First, Do No Harm,” along with a picture of me examining a patient and a picture of my book, “Pediatric Home Care Encyclopedia – Parents Should Also Become Half-Doctors.”
Looking back, I think I am a fortunate doctor that God sent to this world.
