태어나서부터 심신이 건강하고 똑똑하며 효자로 자라고 초등학교때부터 학력이 우수하고 품행이 방정했다. 남의 모범생이 되고 그 후 중고등학교 및 의과 대학을 졸업해 의사 자격을 얻을 때까지 항상 좋은 인성을 지닐 수 있는 삶을 살았다.
나는 Medical Doctor(M.D) 의학 박사학위를 히포 크라틱 선서Hippocratic Oath (First, Do No Harm)을 선서하면서 얻었다.
나는 충남 태안 안면도 섬 갯벌 가 동네에서 농부 부모로부터 태어나 아버지는 고등학교 졸업한 나에게 사범 대학을 가서 선생이 되라고 하셨지만, 그 대신 연세대학교 의과대학에 들어가 의사가 되었다.
졸업후 바로 무의촌 2년 의료 봉사, 한국 육군 군의관 3년 봉사를 한 후 미국에 와서 소아과 전문의가 되었다
고국에 돌아가 의사 생활을 하려고 노력했으나 그렇게 못했지만, 미국에서 소아과 전문의로 지금까지 살고 있다.
요즘도 내가 살고 있는 동네에서 산책를 하거나, 은행에서 우연히 누구를 만나거나, 혹은 타운 사무실에서 예전 환자가족을 만나면 아직도 “Hi, Doctor Lee” 라고 나를 부른다.
우리 의사는 의사 된 후에도 의학 공부, 인성 교육을 계속하고 인술을 베풀고 환자의 개인 비밀을 철저히 지키고, 귀중한 생명과 건강을 최상으로 유지하는 일을 한다.
모든 환자가 돈이 있건 없건, 나이를 가리지 않고 빈부를 가르지 않고, 유 무식을 가르지 않고, 남녀 차별없이, 인종이나 종교 차별없이 항상 환자를 무조건 사랑하면서 치료해야 하는 것이 의사의 본분이다
환자를 볼때는 5Cs, 즉 Compassionate and Empathy(동정심을 갖고), Good Communication( 상호 대화를 잘 해서 서로 잘 이해하고), Concerning(환자의 걱정거리에 관심을 하면서), 병을 Cure(치료)해 주며, 환자를 치료해 줄 뿐만 아니라 Care도 해 주어야 한다.
의사는 3As 를 갖고 있어야 한다. 여기서 첫째 A는 Ability, 즉 의사는 의학 지식을 많이 갖고 있어야 하며, 또한 Affordable (병명은 무엇이고 진단은 어떻게 하고 치료를 어떻게 하고 예방은 어떻게 하는 등 정보를 환자에게 제공) 하고, 환자가 필요로할때 항상 Available(가능) 한 의사가 되어야 한다.
우리 의사는 이렇게 인술을 베풀면서 살려고 의사가 된 것이다.
아무나 의사가 되는 것이 아니다.

From birth, he was healthy in mind and body, intelligent, and a devoted son. From elementary school, he excelled academically and was well-behaved. He was a model student, and from middle school to high school and medical school, he lived a life of constant good character until he became a licensed doctor.
He earned my Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree by swearing the Hippocratic Oath (First, Do No Harm).
He was born to farming parents in a village on the tidal flats of Anmyeondo Island in Taean, South Chungcheong Province. His father encouraged me to attend teachers’ college and become a teacher after graduating from high school. Instead, He entered Yonsei University College of Medicine and became a doctor.
Immediately after graduation, He served two years in a medical program at a no-doctor medical village and three years as a medical officer in the Korean Army before returning to the United States and becoming a pediatrician.
He returned to his home country to pursue a medical career. He tried hard, but He couldn’t, and He is still living in the United States as a pediatrician.
Even now, when He is taking a walk in my neighborhood, bumping into someone at the bank, or meeting a former patient’s family at the town office, they still call me “Hi, Doctor Lee.”
Even after becoming doctors, we continue to study medicine, educate ourselves, practice compassion, strictly protect patients’ personal confidentiality, and strive to maintain the best quality of life and health.
A doctor’s duty is to treat all patients with unconditional love, regardless of their financial status, age, wealth, education, education, gender, race, or religion.
When treating patients, we must adhere to the 5Cs: Compassionate and Empathetic, Good Communication, Concerning, and Cure. We must not only treat patients but also provide care.
A doctor must possess the 3As. The first A stands for Ability, which means a doctor must possess medical knowledge. A doctor must possess a wealth of knowledge, be affordable (provide patients with information on the diagnosis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention), and always be available when patients need it.
We, doctors, became doctors to live by providing this kind of medical care.
Not just anyone can become a doctor.
