We can’t make a doctor, but he can become one if he wants to.
태어나서부터 심신이 건강하고 똑똑하며 효자로 자라고 초등학교 때부터 학력이 우수하고 품행이 방정했다. 남의 모범생이 되고 그 후 중고등학교 및 의과대학을 졸업해 의사 자격을 얻을 때까지 항상 좋은 인성을 지닐 수 있는 삶을 살았다.나는 Medical Doctor(M.D.) 의학 박사 학위를 히포크라틱 선서(Hippocratic Oath, First, Do No Harm)를 하면서 얻는다.나는 충남 태안 안면도 섬 갯벌가 동네에서 농부 부모로부터 태어나 아버지는 고등학교를 졸업한 나에게 사범대학에 가서 선생이 되라고 하셨지만, 그 대신 연세대 학교 의과대학에 들어가 의사가 되었다. 무의촌 2년 의료 봉사, 한국 육군 군의관 3년 봉사를 한 후 미국에 와서 소아과 전문의가 되었다고국에 돌아가 의사 생활을 하려고 노력했으나 그렇게 못했지만, 미국에서 소아과 전문의로 지금까지 살고 있다.요즘도 내가 살고 있는 동네에서 산책을 하거나, 은행에서 우연히 누구를 만나거나, 혹은 타운 사무실에서 예전 환자 가족을 만나면 아직도 “Hi, Doctor Lee” 라고 나를 부른다.우리 의사는 의사가 된 후에도 의학 공부, 인성 교육을 계속하고 인술을 베풀고 환자의 개인 비밀을 철저히 지키고, 귀중한 생명과 건강을 최상으로 유지하는 일을 한다.모든 환자가 돈이 있건 없건, 나이를 가리지 않고 빈부를 가르지 않고, 유 무식을 가르지 않고, 남녀 차별없이, 인종이나 종교 차별없이 항상 환자를 무조건 사랑하면서 치료해야 하는 것이 의사의 본분이다환자를 볼때는 5Cs, 즉 Compassionate and Empathy(동정심을 갖고), Good Communication( 상호 대화를 잘 해서 서로 잘 이해하고), Concerning(환자의 걱정거리에 관심을 하면서), 병을 Cure(치료)해 주며, 환자를 치료해 줄 뿐만 아니라 Care도 해 주어야 한다.의사는 3As를 갖고 있어야 한다. 여기서 첫째 A는 Ability, 즉 의사는 의학 지식을 많이 갖고 있어야 하며, 또한 Affordable(병명은 무엇이고 진단은 어떻게 하고 치료를 어떻게 하고 예방은 어떻게 하는 등 정보를 환자에게 제공)하고, 환자가 필요로 할 때 항상 있는 available 의사가 되어야 한다.우리 의사는 이렇게 인술을 베풀면서 살려고 의사가 된 것이다.아무나 의사가 되는 것이 아니다.이상원미국 및 한국 소아과 전문의

Doctors are made, not made.
We can’t make a doctor, but he can become one if he wants to.
From birth, he was healthy in body and mind, intelligent, and a devoted son. He excelled academically and was well-behaved from elementary school. He was a model student, and from then on, he lived a life of constant good character until he graduated from middle and high school and medical school, earning his medical license.
I earned my Medical Doctor (M.D.) degree by taking the Hippocratic Oath: “First, Do No Harm.”
I was born to farming parents in a village on the tidal flats of Anmyeondo Island in Taean, South Chungcheong Province. My father encouraged me to attend teachers’ college and become a teacher after graduating from high school. Instead, I entered Yonsei University College of Medicine and became a doctor. After serving two years as a medical volunteer in a medical village and three years as a medical officer in the Korean Army, I returned to the United States and became a pediatrician.
I tried to return to my home country and pursue a medical career, but failed. However, I remain a pediatrician in the United States.
Even now, when I take a walk in my neighborhood, run into someone at the bank, or meet a former patient’s family at the town office, they still greet me with, “Hi, Doctor Lee.”
After becoming doctors, our doctors continue their medical studies, character education, and practice compassionate care, thoroughly protecting patients’ confidentiality, and strive to maintain the highest quality of life and health. A doctor’s duty is to treat all patients with unconditional love, regardless of their financial status, age, wealth, education, gender, race, or religion.
When treating patients, they should adhere to the 5Cs: Compassionate and Empathetic, Good Communication (enhancing mutual understanding through effective communication), Concerning (paying attention to the patient’s concerns), and Cure (treating the patient’s illness). Doctors must possess the 3As. The first, A, is Ability. Doctors must possess extensive medical knowledge. They must also be Affordable (provide patients with information on the disease, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention) and be available when patients need them.
We, doctors, became doctors to live and breathe this kind of compassionate care.
