A Tour of Korea

A Tour of Korea
Around 1985, after securing accommodations at the Onyang Dogo Hot Springs and renting a private car, I climbed Chilgapsan Mountain in Cheongyang with my wife. On our descent, we heard that Cheongyang was famous for its chili peppers, *Banha* (Pinellia tubers), and beautiful maidens.
Next, we crossed the Baekmagang River to visit Buyeo—the ancient capital of the Baekje Kingdom—where we viewed Nakhwaam Rock and toured Buyeo Park. I met up with my childhood friends, Go Su-chang and President Dong Jeong-yu, and we had passed through the vast Mangyeong Plain and arrived in Gunsan. We bought and ate yellow Korean melons—piled high on a street cart—one by one, and even purchased a whole bundle to take with us. Passing through the *Hoepari* Alley—a red-light district in Gunsan I had only heard about in my youth—we headed toward the Byeonsan Peninsula.
The Byeonsan Peninsula proved to be a harbor of exquisite beauty. After admiring the live shellfish, blue crabs, cuttlefish, and flounder teeming in the waters, we departed for Jeonju.
In Jeonju, we visited the museum dedicated to the ancestors of the Jeonju Yi clan; from there, we passed through Gwangju and ascended Yudalsan Mountain in Mokpo. The panoramic view of the surrounding area from the summit of Yudalsan was truly breathtaking.
Next, we traveled through Uldolmok Strait to reach Jindo Island. There, we visited Unrimsanbang—a renowned art studio—and admired the famous Jindo dogs. On our return journey, we stopped once more to view Uldolmok Strait, the historic site where Admiral Yi Sun-sin successfully repelled the Japanese invasion.
From there, we headed to Haenam, the southernmost tip of the Korean peninsula. While in the area, we visited the museum dedicated to Jeong Yak-yong—the great-great-grandfather of my own mother.
Continuing our journey, we passed through Naganeupseong Folk Village and Busan’s Haeundae Beach before traveling to Gyeongju. There, we paid our respects at the tomb of Alpyeong—the ancestor of the Gyeongju Yi clan and one of the six chieftains who served King Park Hyeokgeose, the founder of the Silla Kingdom—offering a deep, traditional bow. Afterward, we proceeded to Pohang.
Passing through Pohang, we traveled on to Samcheok and Gangneung, where the scenery was as pristine and beautiful as a freshly painted canvas. We continued further north to visit the Goseong Peace and Unification Observatory, and after passing by the majestic Mt. Kumgang (Geumgangsan), we finally returned to our starting point in Dogo. My friend Go Su-chang, President of Far East Oil, returned to his home in Busan from Haeundae.
