전국 시대, 철인(哲人)으로서 공자의 사상을 계승 발전시킨 맹자(孟子:B.C. 372?～289?)는 《맹자(孟子)》〈진심편(盡心篇)〉에서 이렇게 말했다.

군자에게는 세 가지 즐거움이 있다.
[君子有三樂(군자 유삼락)]

첫째 즐거움은 양친이 다 살아 계시고 형제가 무고한 것이요.
[父母具存 兄弟無故(부모구존 형제무고)]

둘째 즐거움은 우러러 하늘에 부끄러움이 없고 구부려 사람에게 부끄럽지 않은 것이요.
[仰不愧於天 俯不怍於人(앙불괴어천 부부작어인)]

셋째 즐거움은 천하의 영재를 얻어서 교육하는 것이다.
[得天下英才 而敎育之(득천하영재 이교육지)]

공자는 《논어(論語)》〈계시편(季시篇)〉에서 ‘손해 되는 세가지 좋아함[損者三樂(손자삼요)]’을 다음과 같이 꼽았다.
교락(驕樂:방자함을 즐김), 일락(逸樂:놀기를 즐김), 연락(宴樂:주색을 즐김).

Mencius (c. 372–289 B.C.), a philosopher of the Warring States period who inherited and developed the philosophy of Confucius, stated the following in the “Jinxin” chapter of *Mencius*:

A gentleman possesses three joys.

The first joy is that both parents are alive and siblings are safe and sound.

The second joy is that one feels no shame before Heaven when looking up, and no shame before people when bowing down. [To look up without shame toward Heaven, and to look down without fear toward man]

The third joy is to obtain the talented people of the world and educate them.

In the *Ji Shi* chapter of the *Analects*, Confucius listed the following “three harmful likes”:

Pleasure of arrogance, pleasure of idleness, and pleasure of drinking and women.
