커네티컷 주지사 John G. Roland는 주청에 태극기를 게양하고 한인들, 특히 커네티컷 한인회 임원들과 가족들을 초청하여 이상원 박사를 축하하는 행사를 가졌다. 과거 32년 동안 이상원 박사는 의사로서 의료 행위를 특히 월등하게 잘했고 미국 지방 주민들뿐만 아나라 한인 교포들에게 정신적으로 좋은 지도자가 되고자 하였고 그는 다양한 지식을 소유했으며, 거기에다가 인정이 많고, 동정심이 많았다.
그는 정말로 Inspiration하고 특출나게 좋은 인간성을 가졌다. 그는 우선 가족을 사랑하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 알고 부모님과 형제자매 조카들까지 미국으로 이민시켰다. 또한 그 지방 주민들과 커네티컷 주 한인들을 물심양면으로 힘껏 돕는 일을 했다. 그는 진짜로 모범적인 의사이고 좋은 인간성을 지닌 의사이고, 좋은 인간이다.
커네티컷 주지사 Governor John G Roland은 2003년 12월 22일을 커네티컷 주 Dr. John Sangwon Lee Day로 선포하며 커네티컷 전 시민이 그를 축하하기를 바란다고 말했다.
참고로 이상원 의사는 의사가 된 후, 약 50만 만명 이상 환자들의 건강증진 관리, 진료를 했으나 단 한건의 의료 사고나 진료 문제로 법적 문제가 생기지 않았다. 또 환자나 보호자로부터 서신 불평도 받은 적 없다. 하나님 감사합니다.

Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland hosted an event to honor Dr. Sangwon Lee; the ceremony included the raising of the South Korean flag at the State Capitol and an invitation extended to the Korean community—specifically the officers and families of the Korean Association of Connecticut. Over the course of his 32-year medical career, Dr. Lee not only demonstrated exceptional clinical excellence but also strove to be a source of spiritual guidance for both local residents and the Korean diaspora. He was a man of vast knowledge, deep humanity, and profound compassion.
He was truly an inspiring figure with an outstanding character. Recognizing the importance of family, he helped his parents, siblings, and even his nieces and nephews immigrate to the United States. Furthermore, he dedicated himself to providing wholehearted support—both material and emotional—to local residents and the Korean community in Connecticut. He was a truly exemplary physician, a doctor of great character, and a wonderful human being.
On December 22, 2003, Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland proclaimed the day as “Dr. John Sangwon Lee Day” in the state, expressing his hope that all citizens of Connecticut would join in honoring him. For the record, since becoming a physician, Dr. Lee Sang-won has treated and managed the health of over 500,000 patients without a single legal issue arising from medical accidents or treatment-related problems. Furthermore, he has never received a letter of complaint from a patient or a patient’s guardian. Thank God.
