Raise your sons and daughters with unconditional real love

What is ‘love’?
It consists of ‘love through eye contact,’ ‘love through physical touch,’ and ‘love expressed through focused attention and care.’
Typically, parents meet, date, marry, conceive, give birth, and raise their children—nurturing them as they grow until they eventually leave home as independent adults.
Yet, in reality, most parents—even as they provide this ‘love through eye contact,’ ‘physical touch,’ and ‘focused attention and care’—are often unaware of just how vital these forms of love are, or how best to convey them.
Schools, too, do not teach us about this kind of love.
Fortunately, we can learn about it through books like this one.
I was born on Anmyeondo Island to parents who were farmers.
4 Preface 5
Growing up, I had never even heard of or seen these ways of expressing love.
After I married and had three children of my own, I raised them—up until they reached middle school—without truly knowing how to express my love for them.
My parents were remarkable; they raised nine children.
My mother nursed me and provided physical affection, yet I have no memory of my parents ever holding me in an embrace—a specific form of physical, loving touch.
What about other parents? I once held a seminar for 100 Korean-American parents in one room and their 100 adolescent children in another, focusing on the topic of “how to raise your children with love.” When I asked the parents, “How do you raise your children with love?” some even countered by asking, “What kind of parent doesn’t love their children?”
In fact, 95 of the parents insisted that they had raised their children with love.
However, when I asked the adolescents in the other room, “Do you think your parents raised you with love?” only five of them answered that they felt loved by their parents.
Why such a discrepancy?
It is because the parents’ love was not effectively conveyed to their children.
This highlights just how crucial it is to offer children genuine, unconditional love.
Dear parents, I encourage you to keep this book with you—perhaps in your bag—and read it often. The love between a parent and a child is so fundamental that it serves as a cornerstone for the entire world.
The content of this book is also available on my website, *drleepediatrics.com*—a comprehensive guide to pediatric home care titled “Parents Should Also Be Half-Doctors.” This book consists of key excerpts taken from the section of the website titled “Raise Your Children with Genuine, Unconditional Love.”
I will provide more details about my medical website, *drleepediatrics.com*, on the following page.
The site contains a complete collection of pediatric and adolescent medical knowledge—the very foundation of my 32 years of clinical practice—organized into a comprehensive guide for home care: “Parents Should Also Be Half-Doctors.” Please feel free to visit this site anytime for medical and health-related information regarding growing children. (Access is free.)
This book and website came to fruition with the help of my wife.
I would like to express my gratitude to her. (Please note that she has already passed away.)
I extend my thanks to Mr. Han-woong Jeong (Harvard graduate) for compiling my 32 years of pediatric expertise—originally found in my encyclopedia *Parents Must Also Be Half-Doctors*—into the website drleepediatrics.com. I also thank Parangsae Media for publishing this book.
Sincerely, John Sangwon Lee, MD, FAAP (Pediatrician certified in both the US and Korea)

Editor’s Note
Why We Must Raise Our Sons and Daughters
with Unconditional, True Love
As children and adolescents (spanning from the fetal stage and infancy through the toddler years, preschool, school age, and adolescence up to age 21) grow, their fundamental needs include food, clothing, and shelter; healthcare; love; and character education.
Among these, the most essential requirement is the unconditional, true love provided by parents. However, while almost all parents raise their children out of love, many do not fully understand how to express that “unconditional, true love” effectively—specifically through eye contact, physical touch, and focused, attentive care.
Consequently, the parents’ love is not always successfully conveyed to their children. This can lead to mental and physical issues, both while the children are growing up and after they have become adults. For instance, children and adolescents who grow up without receiving adequate, healthy love may face issues regarding their mental and physical development; they are also more susceptible to problems such as anxiety, abnormal stress, depression, suicidal tendencies, running away from home, bullying, substance abuse, smoking, and alcoholism.
To prevent such issues, parents must raise their children by providing ample love expressed through eye contact and physical touch, as well as dedicated attention and care.
The publisher recommends this book—written by Dr. Lee Sang-won, a pediatrician with over 60 years of clinical experience, the author of 15 books on child health and parenting, and the creator of the pediatric website drleepediatrics.com—to all parents raising children. October 2026
