Toe Fracture
For further information, please visit “drleepediatrics.com” and then Search.
For more information, please visit drleepediatrics.com and search.
● Foot or toe bones can be fractured from play, sports, or accidents.
● The toe bones are called phalanges.
● There are seven tarsal bones in each foot: the talus, calcaneus, three cuneiform bones, the cuboid bone, and the navicular bone.
● The tarsal bones, including the calcaneus and talus, along with the fibula and tibia, form the ankle joint.
● The tarsal bones are connected to the lower parts of the tibia and fibula in the lower leg above and to the metatarsals below.
● The bones in the middle of the foot are called metatarsals. Each foot has five metatarsal bones.
These metatarsals connect to the tarsal bones posteriorly and to the metatarsals anteriorly.
The bones in the toes are called metatarsals.
The metatarsals can also fracture (see Figure 7-56).
■ Symptoms and Signs of a Toe Bone Fracture
The bones in the toes are called metatarsals.
If a metatarsal bone is fractured, the symptoms and signs vary depending on the type of metatarsal bone and the severity of the fracture.
If the metatarsal bone (toe bone) is slightly fractured, the fractured toe may swell and appear red and bruised, turning black and blue.
When a fracture occurs in a metatarsal bone, pain in that toe is usually worse when bearing weight on it.
2-3 days after a fracture, the fractured toe may become more swollen, red and bruised, and the skin on that toe may become tight. ● The area where the fractured toe bone (phalange) is located may be painful when gently pressed with your hand.
● Minor toe bone fractures usually heal well within 2-3 weeks.
■ Diagnosis of a Toe Bone (phalange) Fracture
● If a toe bone fracture is suspected based on a combination of medical history, symptoms, signs, and physical examination, an X-ray of the toe is performed.
● The big toe has two joints, and each of the other toes has three joints.
● If the head of a toe joint is dislocated, the ligaments, cartilage, muscles, and tendons surrounding the joint may become abnormally stretched or torn. The head of the toe bone, which is located within the joint, may become slightly dislocated, or even severely dislocated, within the joint capsule.

● The signs and symptoms of a fractured toe bone are very similar to those of a dislocation or sprain of the head of the toe joint. Therefore, it is often difficult to differentiate between a sprained or fractured head or a dislocation of the head of the phalanx based solely on physical examination.
● Therefore, a differential diagnosis is often made using a toe X-ray.

■ Treatment of Toe Fractures
● Treatment varies depending on the severity of the toe fracture.
● First, stabilize the child. If a toe fracture is suspected, stop bearing weight on the foot and avoid straining it.
● Immobilize the fractured toe by wrapping the suspected fractured toe with a bandage or one or two adjacent healthy toes.
● Make a splint using an appropriately sized sponge or board, apply it to the fractured toe and the affected toe, and take the child to the emergency room or pediatric clinic for appropriate follow-up treatment.
● For minor, simple toe fractures, immobilize the fractured toe with a bandage or one or two adjacent healthy toes. Do not apply any weight or pressure to the foot. Treatment for 2-3 weeks usually results in successful healing.

It has been more than a century since the need for a Korean-language parenting information bible that can be easily accessed and read by anyone, anywhere, at any time, to promote health, which is one of the basic necessities of life for Korean men, women, and children in Korea and around the world. I think so.
If I have the time, I would like to give the entire Parenting Bible to every Korean family worldwide.
If I have time, I would like to read the entire Parenting Bible aloud to my beloved Korean parents.
Of course, there may be some shortcomings. I am confident that if you raise your children while referring to other parenting bibles, they will grow up happily.
