What is GLP-1?
GLP‑1 stands for glucagon‑like peptide‑1, a hormone produced mainly by specialized cells in the small intestine (L‑cells) after you eat. It is released into the bloodstream and binds to GLP‑1 receptors on several organs, including the pancreas, liver, stomach, and brain.
GLP‑1 helps control blood sugar by boosting insulin release when glucose is high and suppressing glucagon, which limits how much sugar the liver pours into the blood. It also slows stomach emptying, increases the feeling of fullness, and reduces appetite, which helps prevent rapid spikes in blood sugar and helps keep weight from rising too quickly.
