이 대통령은 이날 엑스(X·옛 트위터)에 올린 글에서 “그동안 여성들은 안전한 임신중지 약물을 구하지 못해 해외직구나 불법 거래에 의존해야 했고, 그 과정에서 위험까지 감수해야 했다”며 이같이 말했다.

이 대통령은 “헌법재판소가 낙태죄에 대해 헌법불합치 결정을 내린지 7년이 지났다”며 “비 새는 천장을 고치는 동안에도 바닥은 젖는다. 완벽한 대책을 기다리기보다 지금 할 수 있는 일부터 하는 게 좀 더 나은 결정”이라고 강조했다.

그러면서 “임신중지 약물을 단계적으로 도입하기로 한 것 역시 이러한 이유에서다”라고 덧붙였다.

이 대통령은 동시에 “도입 과정에서 안전관리 체계를 꼼꼼히 살피고, 의료 현장의 목소리도 충분히 듣겠다”고 약속했다

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) that day, President Lee remarked, “Until now, women have had to rely on direct overseas purchases or illegal transactions because they could not access safe abortion medication, often exposing themselves to risks in the process.”

He emphasized, “It has been seven years since the Constitutional Court ruled the abortion ban unconstitutional. Just as the floor gets wet while one is fixing a leaking ceiling, it is a better decision to take action on what can be done now rather than waiting for a perfect solution.”

He added, “That is precisely why the decision was made to introduce abortion medication in stages.”

At the same time, President Lee pledged, “We will thoroughly examine the safety management system during the introduction process and fully listen to the voices of medical professionals.”
