연세의대 재학 중 나의 주위 급우들은 금수저? 로 은수저?로 동수저? 로 먹고 공부했지만 나는 매일매일 먹고 자는 것을 걱정하면서 의학 공부를 했다.
거기다가 어머님께서는 승모판 부전Mitral insufficiency 심장병을 앓으시고, 아버님은 박정회 정권시 장도영 고리채 정리 청책 발표후 10마지기 논을 아무 잘못 없이 하루 아침에 뺏기고 알코올 중독자로 고생하시고, 고등 학교 다니던 동생 하나는 일본 뇌염 후유증으로 생긴 간질Epilepsy로 고생 고생하는 불행사가 우리 집안에 몰아쳤다.
거기다가 나는 학비를 낼 수 없는 처지에 있었다. 내가 우리 가정에 있었던 이런저런 문제를 안고 의학 공부를 할 때 나의 부모와 동생의 건강 문제를 치료해 주는 의사도 하나도 없었다. 앉아 있으나 서 있거나 자나 깨나 걷거나 공부하는 중 , 나의 머릿속에 이런 문제들이 가득 차 있었다. 누구도 이런 문제를 해결해 주는 사람은 하나도 없었다. 그래도 의과 대학을 졸업 했다.

During my time at Yonsei University College of Medicine, while my classmates studied and lived their lives with the privilege of “gold spoons,” “silver spoons,” or “bronze spoons”—symbols of inherited wealth—I pursued my medical studies while constantly worrying, day in and day out, about where my next meal would come from and where I would sleep.
On top of that, a series of misfortunes swept through our family: my mother suffered from mitral insufficiency; my father—who, through no fault of his own, had lost ten *majigi* (a traditional unit of land) of rice paddies overnight following the announcement of General Chang Do-young’s usury debt liquidation policy during the Park Chung-hee regime—struggled with severe alcoholism; and my younger sibling, then a high school student, endured immense suffering due to epilepsy resulting from complications of Japanese encephalitis.
Furthermore, I found myself in a position where I was unable to pay my tuition fees. As I strove to study medicine while shouldering these various domestic burdens, there was not a single doctor available to provide care for the health issues plaguing my parents and my sibling. Whether sitting or standing, sleeping or waking, walking or studying—my mind was constantly consumed by these overwhelming problems. Yet, there was absolutely no one to be found who could offer a solution to them. Nevertheless, I graduated from medical school.
