Startling and Normal Primitive Reflexes in Newborns and Infants
For more information, please visit drleepediatrics.com. Search.
The following is an example of an online Pediatrics and Adolescent Health Counseling Q&A regarding the question “Startling (a normal reflex in babies)”.
Q&A. My child frequently wakes up startled, even during sleep.
Thank you for your detailed answer. Today is my 58th day. My child frequently wakes up startled, even during sleep.
He sleeps soundly, but once he starts, he keeps waking up and then barely falls back asleep. I’ve given him Gi-eung-hwan, as the adults suggested, but he’s still startled often, which is concerning. In severe cases, he appears to hold his breath for a few seconds and stares.
What should I do in this case? … Please answer.
**Thank you.**

To Soonyoung’s Mother
Hello. Thank you for your good question.
The more information I have about your child’s age, gender, past medical history, family medical history, physical examination findings, and laboratory tests, the more helpful it is for me to answer your question. I will consider the information you provided.
I’m not sure what causes the startle.
However, conditions such as hypocalcemia, tetany, hypoglycemia, hypoparathyroidism, hypomagnesemia, brain damage, nervousness, medications taken during pregnancy, or medications taken by the newborn can cause startle or similar physical convulsions in babies.
However, I believe your child’s symptoms are likely due to the Moro reflex or another primitive reflex that is normal for infants.
I call the Moro reflex the “Hurrah reflex.”
I recommend that you consult a pediatrician for an examination and diagnosis to discuss this issue. [Parents Should Become Semi-Doctors Too – Pediatric Family Nursing Encyclopedia] – Volume 3: Growth and Development of Newborns, Infants, School-Age Children, and Adolescents – Please refer to “Start”, Normal Primitive Reflexes in Newborns, Moro Reflex, etc.
I don’t know much about Gi-eung-hwan.
It’s best to avoid giving any medication to young children if the pharmacological action, ingredients, effects, or side effects are unclear.
If you have any further questions, please contact me again.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Lee Sang-won
The following is an example of a Q&A session regarding pediatric and adolescent health counseling regarding startle.
Q&A. My child was startled a lot.
I am the father of a two-month-old boy.
My child’s skin was very red and inflamed, so I suspected atopic dermatitis, so I let him sunbathe for about 10 minutes whenever the sun was out. But two days ago, I told him I was going to sunbathe, so I lay him down and then flipped him over, and he freaked out (his eyes widened and he started waving his arms). I quickly held him in my arms, and he cried a little, but then he was fine, so I was relieved. But since then, he freaks out whenever I lay him down on his back (his eyes widened and his arms were waving too—he doesn’t have a fever). He freaks out even when I lay him down to change his diaper. I have to hold him tightly to put him down.
Even when I lay him down, I have to hold his hand. Yesterday, I held him, and he was still for a while before freaking out again. I’m very worried. I’m worried that something is wrong, and I’m heartbroken that I might have hurt him through some mistake as a new father.
He was born with renal failure. He now weighs 6kg. I gave him Gieung-hwan yesterday and the day before. I hope it’s not a seizure. When he’s freaked out, if I hold him, he cries a little and then stops.

Hello, Taegeun. Thank you for your helpful question. The more information we have about your child’s age, gender, past medical history, family medical history, physical examination findings, and clinical tests, the more helpful it is for us to provide you with an answer. We will provide an answer based on the information you provided.
I can’t say for sure why your two-month-old infant is so startled.
It seems like he or she is exhibiting a primitive reflex, such as the Moro reflex, which is normal for infants.
We’re not sure, but it doesn’t seem to be Gyeonggi.
Gi-eung-hwan has no effect on normal primitive reflexes.
Wrapping your child in a swaddle or blanket or laying them down to help them feel loved by their mother or father can help reduce the occurrence of primitive reflexes, such as the Moro reflex.
If the startle persists and you are concerned, please consult a pediatrician.
Please refer to [Parents Should Be Half-Doctors – Pediatric and Family Nursing Encyclopedia] – Volume 6: Healthy Growth and Development in Newborns and Diseases,
Volume 3: Growth and Development in Newborns, Infants, School-Age Children, and Adolescents, Normal Primitive Reflexes, Startle, etc.

Thank you. Lee Sang-won
The following is an example of a Q&A from the online pediatric and adolescent health counseling service regarding “My baby is so startled.”
Q&A. My baby is so startled.
My baby is so startled that I’ve taken herbal medicine to a herbal medicine store and given herbal medicine, but it hasn’t helped. In fact, they’re even more startled after I startled them. Most people say that a baby’s startle is a Moro reflex, but it’s so severe that I’m posting this. While a baby is startled by a loud noise, they’re usually startled when they’re in the mouth, but they’re also startled when there’s no sound or even when they’re sleeping.
Even Ji-yeo was drinking formula, and when I went to get her some, she was still crying and startled. I’d like to know if there’s something wrong… Is it okay for her to keep getting startled like this? What should I do if she keeps getting startled? I appreciate your valuable answers and advice.

Dear Yunmi
Hello. Thank you again for your question. It’s a good question. The more information we have about your child’s age, gender, past medical history, family medical history, physical examination findings, and clinical tests, the more helpful it is for me to provide you with an answer. I will provide an answer based on the information you have provided.
In my opinion, their nerves seem naturally more sensitive, and their primitive reflexes are more pronounced and normal.
Of course, gas can cause them to startle.
However, if they continue to startle, you should immediately see your regular pediatrician to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
■ The following conditions may cause your baby to startle abnormally:
① Convulsions
, ② Brain abnormalities
, ③ Hypoglycemia, ④ Low calcium or magnesium, ⑤ Inborn errors of metabolism
, ⑥ Congenital or acquired infectious diseases
, ⑦ Brain trauma
, ⑧ Cerebral hemorrhage
, ⑨ Brain malformation
and so on.
To determine if any of the conditions listed above are present, we will review your medical history, symptoms, signs, and physical findings, and conduct necessary tests to diagnose them.
Please contact us again if you have any further questions.
Thank you.

I believe that it has been over a century since we needed a parenting information bible in Korean that anyone can easily access and read, anytime, anywhere, to promote health, one of the basic necessities of life for Koreans of all ages and genders in Korea and around the world.
If I have the time, I would like to give a copy of the Parenting Bible to every Korean family worldwide.
If I have the time, I would like to give a copy of the Parenting Bible to every Korean family worldwide.
If I have the time, I would like to share the Parenting Bible with my beloved Korean parents. I’d like to read it all out loud.
Of course, there may be some shortcomings. I am confident that if you raise your children while referring to other parenting bibles, they will undoubtedly grow up happily.
