Description:
This illustration, created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveals the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses.
Between February 12 and April 2 of this year, out of 150,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients in the United States, 2,572 were pediatric patients under the age of 18.
Of these pediatric patients, 33% were children residing in New York City. The clinical characteristics of these pediatric COVID-19 patients are as follows:
The median age was 11 years old.
The age range was 1 to 17 years old.
73% of the pediatric patients presented with typical symptoms of COVID-19.
Specifically: fever (56%), cough (54%), and shortness of breath (13%). In comparison, these symptoms were observed in 93% of adult patients.
Other symptoms included sore throat (24%), headache (28%), and muscle pain (23%); these occurred less frequently than in adult patients.
The hospitalization rate was 6%. For adult patients aged 18 to 64, the rate was 10%.
68% were asymptomatic.
23% of the pediatric COVID-19 patients had underlying medical conditions, such as asthma, immunocompromise, or cardiovascular disease.
It is suggested that children with asymptomatic COVID-19 play a role in transmitting the coronavirus that causes the disease. Source: NEJM Journal Watch, May 2020
