Pancreatic Cancer Vaccine
This novel vaccine supercharges the immune system and causes immune cells, which tend to be tolerant of cancer, to seek out and kill pancreatic cancer cells throughout the body.
The pancreatic cancer vaccine is a form of immunotherapy.
The vaccine uses pancreatic cancer cells that have been treated with radiation to inhibit their ability to grow. These cells have also been genetically altered to secrete a molecule called GM-CSF. This molecule acts as a lure to attract immune system cells to the site of the tumor vaccine where they encounter proteins called antigens on the surface of the radiated cells. Then, these newly armed immune cells patrol the rest of the patient’s body to destroy any circulating pancreas cancer cells still remaining.

엘리자베스 자피(Elizabeth Jaffee) 박사와 다니엘 라헤루(Daniel Laheru) 박사가 개발한 이 새로운 백신은 면역 체계를 강력하게 활성화합니다. 이를 통해 평소라면 암세포에 대해 관용적인(공격하지 않는) 태도를 보이던 면역 세포들이 암세포를 찾아내어 전신에 퍼진 췌장암 세포를 사멸시키도록 유도합니다.
이 췌장암 백신은 일종의 면역요법입니다.
이 백신은 증식 능력을 억제하기 위해 방사선 처리를 한 췌장암 세포를 사용합니다. 또한 이 세포들은 GM-CSF라는 분자를 분비하도록 유전적으로 변형되었습니다. 이 분자는 면역 세포들을 백신이 투여된 종양 부위로 유인하는 역할을 하며, 그곳에서 면역 세포들은 방사선 처리된 암세포 표면에 있는 ‘항원’이라는 단백질을 마주하게 됩니다. 이후, 새롭게 무장한 면역 세포들은 환자의 몸 곳곳을 순찰하며 남아 있는 췌장암 세포를 파괴합니다.
